Julien seems to like to use old art history references for his visual vocabulary. In Playtime he posits a type of capitalist sublime, referencing caspar friedrich.
I saw this in Seoul with John a few years ago. I really liked it, I think you underrate Julien. The sequence with the drowning cockle shell pickers is visually amazing.
